Finally! A worthwhile picture of Satsuki! Satsuki was the very first character I ever created, way back in 8th grade. Nowadays I never use her anymore, but sometimes I still take a stab at drawing her. She’s probably the character who has matured the most over the years from her original adolescent baby face. The challenge is to make her look as mature on paper as I see her in my mind. This illustration is an example of one such attempt that was successful. The dress I stole directly from a French model shoot in one of my magazines. I love the mixture of professional and Goth-Lolita styles. In truth, it looks very French to me.

Occasionally, random icons mate with certain characters. In the case of Satsuki, that icon is eggs. I’ve only drawn a few pictures with Satsuki and eggs, but on this one I decided to go wild. It was refreshing to not draw any clothes, and just focus on skin. Keeping Suki naked makes the picture feel earthy and natural. The other girl is Kitty Buu in her first non-chibi form, based on a costume I created on Gaia. Kitty Buu looks like autumn in all her contrasting colors. I enjoy putting patterns on clothes, though they’re usually pretty redundant.

Justice, Kellner, and Nathaniel

It was high time I drew my vampiric family all together, and so I took advantage of the inspiration and my growing need to do more close ups. For a first go at Justice, the results weren’t so bad, though his face looks off to me. Kellner and Nathaniel posed no challenge, since their characters are fully developed. Justice still makes me nervous because he is so ambiguous. I wasn’t sure about a background, so I resorted to blood splatters. If you look close, you can see Kellner’s cigarette.

Not much to say about this picture. I was in a rut when I illustrated this, so there is nothing special about it. Jenna’s haughtier definitely came through, though. I had fun exaggerating her synched waste in the corset too.

I was ready to do another close up of Cossette in her “Immortal Beloved/Beethoven’s Muse” costume. The black orchids were tiresome, but this was one of the rare pictures which turned out perfect the first time around. I added the music staves much later, after I signed the picture, along with the blotted ink. I laugh at the two “popping” flowers.

Haydee is fun to draw, especially because her hair is green. The feel of this picture is almost watery, with Haydee’s hair flying everywhere. The tulips tied in her hair were something new, and I LOVED how they compliment the sense of freedom in her hair and dress. I had no idea what to make of the color scheme here, but I followed my instincts and it turned out for the best.

I was inspired to illustrate a medieval dress in purple and light pink. The original color concept was supposed to be much lighter. As a thumbnail, this picture was alright. I’d like to go back later on and try it again and spend some more time on it. The dress was somewhat modeled on a costume CLAMP designed for Chi-chan.

I don’t know much about X-men, having only watched “X-men: Evolution” growing up and having seen two of the movies. Gambit-times-Rouge, however, is my favorite coupling, so I thought it would be romantic to draw them under a big Cajun moon. Rouge’s outfit was such a conundrum at first, and after I decided to put fish net on her, it became tedious. Not much to say about Gambit, he turned out well enough. I’m starting to really enjoy speckling in stars against night skies.

Another World of Warcraft illustration. This picture was done when I was frustrated with myself, and had no new ideas. I was watching my friend play WOW, and this picture came out of it. The yellow shine on Olive’s skin was a shot in the dark for me, but she ended up actually glowing! The crater’s on the moon is a technique learned from a friend. On another note, drawing Arthas a second time wasn’t as frightening as the first. I only drew half his helmet because I wanted to give him a more “human” feel (well, as human as he can be now…) This was also the first picture in which I used gouache for stars. Although the entire picture turned out glorious, the tree branch is still my favorite part of it. Heehee.

The pose was inspired by a picture of Kanno: The Girl A Cello. I didn't feel like drawing a classic violin, so I modified it. I don't think it's actually playable how it is. Rebecca does not look good in much but black and deep red, but I should experiment with more colors.

The inspiration for this piece was a scene from the Gankutsuou trailer, in which the Count is dueling in a grave yard, aiming his gun in just such a pose, most of his face shaded. While the actual scene was never shown in the anime (UNHAPPINESS!) the image has stayed with me for years. I knew I wanted to draw something similar, and I knew there was no one who could convey an essence of life peril like Jeremiah. Truthfully, it was more difficult than expected. Jeremiah is such an imposing man, it's often difficult to draw his figure and portray his masculinity in a desirable amount. The final product wound up a tad short in a few areas, but as with most pieces, it is an overall success. It's one more work which relies on constrasting hues rather than gray scale shading, though for Jeremiah's face, I decided gray would give a more "heartless, soulless" appeal. The gun was illustrated cold turkey, and falls short of a true period pistol, but it gets the idea across. My personal favorite component is the blood smattered background---a forshadowing of the inevitable.

This little diddy is an incorrigible image that will be forever impressed upon my mind. Hikaru is my soul mate character is many ways, and she is by far the most charming and loveable to draw. Her antics are innumerable, and this is only one of several. Its essence, to my absolute delight, turned out to be Hikaru-esque through and through, and though it's tiny, it goes into the vault of most beloved illustrations.

Another rendition of Myazaki's Ponyo-chan. To date, all my depictions have been disloyal to the original, and for those who take umbrage, I sincerely apologize. That said, half the fun of artistic renderings is putting your own spin on the concept, and thus is born yet another of my beloved Ponyo's, this time post-fish, in her sailor attire. Again, the costume was based on a design from "So You Think You Can Dance," (although the hat, undershirt, and converse and colors are my own additions.) I ended up making Ponyo older here, and she only seems to mature as I continue to draw her. The little gold fish were just an afterthought, though I may add in a photoshop anchor later on just for fun.

Another example of the "sheen" technique, this time on the generic romantic couple. There isn't much substance to this work; the characters are complete strangers, even to me, and there story is undeveloped. It's an example of what the mind conjurs while watching Masterpiece Theatre's Jane Eyre, and nothing more. The translucsence of the maiden's shift is this pictures most interesting quality.

Talk about your epic fail. This was an example of pure perserverence that lead to no beneficial ends. I normally would have quit on something this impossible long ago, but the subject matter of Rice galloping over the moores before a storm, with a bleak castle in the background was too inticing to ignore. Despite my disapointment, I learned a great deal from this piece--such as not to use markers in landscaping. The castle--for all its bold, awkward facade--became my favorite aspect, as did the clouds. The embankment blended together well. If I could go back and change anything in this work, I would have made the entire scene more realistic--next time I'll use paints.

Hikaru is rarely depicted over 14, but this drawing was purposfully drawn with a more mature air. The color of the dress is Hikaru's signature hue, and brings out her hair. This was one of the first images I drew incorporating "sheen" on the skin. It was a smashing success. Hikaru-chan looks serene and composed.

These thumbsnail pieces began with the original idea of Fawn holding a water lilly with milk weed in her hair (Dag and Fawn's favorite flowers.) From there, I just went wild. Fawn's dresses are so limited, it's difficult to find styles and colors for them all. Some of them were a little far fetched, like the bright pink.

This was themed off an outfit on "So You Think You Can Dance." I had a rough sketch of it, but never could find someone to play dress up with. For such a lacey get up, CLAMP'S Chii from Chobits seemed a good choice. Her hair, eyes and ears were the best to draw and color. It was odd not detailing the pupils, and I rarely get to color eyes amber. Chii's expression was perfect.

A picture of my friend's fictional character Tatiana. I had the idea of incorporating her with a black and green butterfly theme, although originally it was supposed to be a full body drawing rather than a portrait. The expression on Tati's face is so mournful and sad, I was a little surprised when it was completed. The lace around her neck and the designs on the butterflies and pendants were the hardest aspect of this picture. It really tried my patience, but the overall results made it worth the while. I used green blow brush on the original back of the drawing, and then added in the black later on photoshop.

A picture sorely needing a background. I don't draw upside down that often, which is unfortunate because upside down figures have such a free, graceful air about them. Rebecca doesn't look good in many colors, but dark reds and blacks are some of the more complimentary hues, so I went with it. I was most proud of the feather lace on the brim of her skirt, neckline and around her throat. The clock, key and cat don't have any significence.

Another drawing of Ponyo, this time swimming with pearls and fishes. It was difficult to decide whether to put Ponyo in swim attire or not. Being an undersea creature (technically,) I wanted to keep her as natural as possible--aka, void of all human influences other than appearance. On the other hand, it didn't seem right to show her bare naked. I solved the problem by placing fish around her *laugh* The pearls were more for aesthetics and flow rather than practicality.

After a long strain of not-worth-my-time movies, I finally prepped myself to see Ponyo. I was so excited to find an article in the newspaper about it, I had to draw a picture. Granted, my conception of Ponyo was determined prior to the movie. I envisioned her as more of a humanoid goldish cross over (thus her human form with gauzy fins on her flanks.) I also wanted to portray Ponyo a little older than four. All and all, I was extremely happy with this picture. It was my first go at jellyfish and underwater creatures. The blue and purple speckles are gel marker. I think they added a nice touch. FYI, Ponyo's supposed to be holding a pearl.

Gaudy gaudy gaudy. I love portraits of people on thrones. I envisioned this "Monte Cristo" image as a mock Juicy Couture photo--there's certainly enough junk in it! For the record, Mio doesn't smoke, pipe or hookah, but this picture was ripe for bizarre accessories.

Elba and the Gang

I've wanted to do a picture with all of my angel characters in at once for a long time. The problem was finding the right setting. This picture was done with the idea of a poster format. It's a fairly typical layout seen in manga and anime. For me, this picture tells a story, with each character's individual presence being a symbol of their individual tales. On a side note, this was my first time trying camouflouge, and I was happy with the result. I find it funny the cages are floating in mid air. Elba's dress is a china blue design and color motif. From the front going back and up is Elba, Mephistopholes, Angelos, Gabriel, Sophia, Romnius, Persephone, and Elba's Dad (who never got named!) I added the clouds afterwards because the background looked too bare.

I typically don't think of Rice as a "Victorian" type, but I chose to put her in a Jane Austenesque attire here. I don't color with pink very often, so it was a treat. Rice alwas ends up looking gentle and sentimental. This is one of the best pictures of Rice to date. Note, the flowers were originally done with copic marker and watercolor. I'm learning how to use elementary photoshop, so I blurred the colors together.

A collection of figures. Jonathan (bottom left,) in his signature "British pride" attire, Olive (bottom middle) in a chance pose which turned out better than expected. At top right at Richard and Cossette, running from the unknown entity chasing them. I hope it doesn't look like Richard is kidnapping Cossette, she looks so terrified!

Again, another picture of Olive, and again a success. There are certain instances in my art career where I turn out something that is simply perfect--when the depth of emotion I need to convey is satisfied entirely. This was on such picture. I really enjoyed drawing this. I normally don't have inspiration to draw nude, but there is something aesthetic and pure about nakedness. Here, Olive is embracing the Light, without barriers of any kind. It feels holy, tranquil, and breathtaking all at once.

A long time ago, I designed a costume for Elba specifically for her "Holy Grail" self. It was a battle costume, though don't ask how she moves in it. I was ashamed that I forgot to add her three pairs of wings!!! The staff could cleave a person. One day I'd like to own one!

This pose was meant to be a challenge, and I wasn't sure if I could do it. But the finished product was great. I love putting Emily in decorative little dresses. Since I haven't drawn a picture to date which includes Emily and her music box, I thought it appropriate to include it. Ayesha is here too, my second attempt at drawing a Siamese cat. Rather than "streak" Emily's eyes as I usually do to convey her blindness, I wanted to make her eyes look more cloudy here.

I rarely draw Rice, but when I do, it's always special. Since her story is based around ice and snow, I thought she should be depicted as an ice princess. I worked very hard to make her expression gentle, remembering a picture by CLAMP set in a similar fashion. The beads on her dress are gel pen, and the snow flakes were added additionally by computer. One day, when I have better supplies, I would love to go back and try this picture once more, to see if I could get the "ice" feeling a bit better

It was high time I gave Shen his own solo picture. Originally I was nervous about this one because of having to draw Shen's abdomen. I'm notoriously bad at drawing muscles on men, but this was one instance where I got everything almost perfect (to my eyes, at least.) The flames in the background were an afterthought to balance the color of the upper section. They are done in gel marker.

It's really amazing what music can do to you. I drew this picture of Olive while listening to my World of Warcraft soundtracks for the first time. Sometimes, things just come out and you have no idea why or how, but they end up beautiful nonetheless. This image of Olive in a natural, earthy theme is perhaps one of the greatest drawings I've ever made. For me, it's a representation of what I love most about nature, and a celebration of its beauty. It's also a silent commemoration to fantasy in general. But the long and short of it is: I owe this picture to my World of Warcraft soundtracks. Thanks, you genius composers!

Along with my X-men girl River, I thought up a male antagonist to serve as a counter balance. Enter "Nightmare," the man with the power to make you think your living out your worst fear. The idea of illusion and the like is not a new concept to any super hero series in anime or otherwise, but Nightmare still feels special to me somehow, although he doesn't have much substance yet.

Ronin no Bakumetsu Genka - Genka-1.jpg

I'm a big fan of Bakumetsu era Japan. Having just read Peacemaker Kurogane, I was in the mood to do some brainstorming for a new character. Thus, Genka was born. She's still very undeveloped, but hopefully I'll have a chance to expand upon her in someway or another. This was the first full color illustratioin I did for her including a background. Genka is, like Olive, supposed to be more boyish than feminine. I was trying to give her a masculine feel in this picture, but I'm afraid it didn't work out as well as I hoped. Still, I have no regrets about this picture. I LOVE yellow eyes.

I have never played Final Fantasy 8, but a long time ago when I was part of a FF8 forum, Hikaru was a member of SEED. This was the outfit I designed for her, although technically, it isn't really like the SEED outfit at all. Nevertheless, SEED was the inspiration, so this will forever be Hikaru's SEED attire.

So...what to say about this picture? I fear there isn't much; I waited for the right time/inspiration to draw Issac Kellner, and it came. Nathaniel happened to be part of that inspiration. Originally, Issac Kellner was supposed to be at a much smaller profile that showed his entire body, but I didn't like that idea, so I decided to do a portrait style. They look like father and son. The blood was an afterthought I'm very glad I acted on. The red highlights in the smoke are just for color symmetry.

Fawn Bluefield from Bujold's The Sharing Knife: Beguilment was a refreshing heroine. I'm very judgemental of females in most of the books I read, and lately, I've been reading novels with a lack of believable, respectable, and altogether original heroines. Then along came Fawn. I loved her so much I had to draw her as I saw her, and this is the result. In my head, Hikaru Shidou from Rayearth was the model, but I risked making my design too much like CLAMP's. Fortunately, my Fawn turned out good, and not excessively similar to Hikaru (I hope!) I only wish I could have made her braid longer. But that would have been pushing it...

An inebriated Ming. I wanted her to have the traditional make up of a Chinese girl--Mulan was the inspiration, heehee. Her mussed clothes are a little uncharacteristic, but her expression is perfect.

Like the image of Tziporah with the scimitar and panther, this picture was one for experimentation, mostly for character positions. There ended up being some faults I would go back and change if possible, but I overlook them. The background wasn't meant to be realistic so much as fanciful. I wanted to convey the idea of "high up." I wonder if it worked....

After watching Gladiator for the first time, I was inspired to draw something bloody. Blood can have a certain tragically romantic quality to it...or maybe I'm just morbid. The best part of this drawing was filling in the splatter stains on Hikaru-chan's clothes, and using the blow pen for a further "splatter" effect.

A small thumbnail of my rocker. The "MC" stands for "Monte Cristo," which I call my line of costumes and clothing. The charm on the necklace is the Monte Cristo logo. The eye patch was inspired by Tom Cruise's character is Valkyrie.

Inspired by a scene in R.A. Salvatore's Icewind Dale Trilogy, where Drizzt and Bueanor flee down an ally, the former hopping lightly over crates, the latter "crashing through them." The scene delighted me so much I thought it would be amusing to draw Tziporah and friends in a similar situation.

It'll be a cold day in hell when Evangeline actually puts on a get up like this. But since the idea for it came from a mini-rp, and it looked wild in my head, I went along with it. I LOVE this dress, and all its impracticality. Note: The back isn't supposed to go up like a peacock tail, but poof around the wearer. Also note chibi Tziporah in the top hand corner. Heehee.

Another intense, action themed picture. There's no good reason why Drizzt's panther is featured here with Tziporah. Honestly I just wanted to practice my big cats. Nor is there any particular reason why Tziporah has a scimitar in one hand. I suspect the scimitar is probably Drizzt's, but I never really decided. This was an example of a picture which could have been more than it ended up becoming. Tziporah's eyes are lavender instead of red as they should be. Her skin ended up much too dark, and I'm afraid the gray tones are overwhelming. Nevertheless, I was glad the positioning turned out well enough (I'm not normally one who draws "action" poses.) In a way, this image reminds me of a merging of Drizzt and Tziporah...perhaps what they might look like as one?

Back in the days of the Yu-Gi-Oh season featuring the Seal of the Orichalcos (does anyone know how to spell that??) I gave Hikaru an Atlantian costume. This was a recent attempt to replicate it, and try out some architect designs. I have an absolute fetish for church windows, stain glass windows, and circular windows. The gaudier the better. But I have to say my personal favorite aspect of the picture is the rainy storm clouds glimpsed "outside."

Another picture inspired by Lady G's "Poker Face." This time its Julius. lol I liked giving him slight five o'clock shadow, though it didn't seem to show up much on the scanner. The embroidered card symbols on his blouse were an afterthought.

A picture somewhat based on a poker theme, though generally speaking, it's just a card motif. The position was inspired by one of the pop-singer Madonna's poses. Originally, Ai wasn't sitting on a visible object, but she looked like she was squatting without something, so I went back and added her initials to sit on.

Another "epic"picture, with no real story basis behind it. Originally, I just wanted to draw Olive in an action pose, but on second thought, since Olive theoretically exsists in the WOW world of Azeroth, I added in Arthas and Frostmourne. I don't have much of a knack for armor or swords, and Arthas's armor and Frostmourne are quite intricate. I went through many picures to get the details on the helmet.

Long ago in the days when I religiously watched the WB cartoon X-Men Evolution, I came up with a girl mutant who could detach matter particles from one another and rearrange them. While watching the original X-Men the other day, I decided to draw her again. I never named her, but I decided to call her 'River.'
